Dress Down Day FAQ Print E-mail

Answers to some of your questions

What is Dress Down Day?
On a Dress Down Day, schools and businesses allow their students, faculty, and employees to "dress down" in return for a small charitable contribution. Dress Down Days might also be referred to as "Denim Days."

How are funds raised?
Funds are raised when students, faculty, and employees contribute a specific amount of money for the privilege of dressing down. While the amounts may vary, the usual donation is $1 for students and faculty.

Who conducts the event?
While this is an event organized by the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, whenever possible, the event should also be coordinated by an individual within the school or company. He or she should work with a representative from ECF and with a member of the Accounting or HR office.

How does it work?
Once the school or business agrees to conduct the Dress Down Day and a coordinator is appointed, materials will be provided for distribution. These materials may include:

  • Announcement by the Principal, Dean, or President
  • Informational brochures about the charitable organization (in this case, Emmanuel Cancer Foundation)
  • Article in school newsletter or newspaper
  • Posters/flyers on bulletin boards or in student or faculty lounges
  • A collection bin for donations
  • ECF gold pins, stickers, or buttons for distribution on Dress Down Day

Then what?
The first thing that should be done is to have the Principal and/or Coordinator distribute an official announcement. Included in this announcement should be the Principal's endorsement, a brief paragraph about Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, the name and contact information of the coordinator, and any additional information necessary.

After the initial announcement has been made, an informational brochure or flyer should be distributed to students and faculty from ECF with details about the foundation, how the donations will be used, and more information about the date and arrangements. As necessary, notes should be sent to parents informing them of Dress Down Day.

Reminder flyers should be posted around the school the week prior to the arranged date for Dress Down Day.

What happens the day of?
As students and faculty enter the building, the coordinator will be set up with a table, a collection bin, donation envelopes (in case someone wants to donate more than the required $1), and information about Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. If possible, a gold ribbon pin or an ECF pin should be made available to all participants.

What do we do with the donations?
At the end of the day, the coordinator should convert cash into a school check or money order, and along with personal donations, advise the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation of the total. Checks should be mailed to:

Emmanuel Cancer Foundation
1833 Front Street
Scotch Plains, NJ 07076

If requested, an ECF representative can come to the school to pick up the check and take pictures with the coordinator.

Acknowledgements
An ECF representative will follow up with a thank you to the school. Additionally, participating schools will receive recognition on ECF's website and in the foundation's bi-annual newsletter.
