The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation 1983-2008 Hello, Friends. It has been over twenty-five years since Susan & Joseph Vizzoni huddled in their kitchen, brainstorming what would become New Jersey’s premier support agency for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Like many grassroots organizations, the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation has grown and developed, it has had strong years and tough years, but ultimately, it has made an impact on over 1800 families since its inception in 1983.
Where We Came From… "I was spending all day in the hospital, and as soon as Joe finished work, he’d come relieve me, and as soon as I had slept, I would come back. We were fortunate to be able to fall back on friends for child care and assistance with other needs, but I started to wonder how a family in other circumstances could cope with the high levels of personal and financial stress. Ultimately, we felt that the best thing we could do to help was to create a foundation that could provide these families with emotional, spiritual, material, and financial support." At first, New Jersey families were hesitant to accept any support from the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. Joe and Susan recall talking to one mother who said, “We’re having enough trouble getting food on the table; we don’t have time to sit down with a counselor.” In response, an ECF volunteer delivered a new microwave to the family’s door. Overwhelmed that an organization was willing and able to make a huge difference with a small gesture, they became one of ECF’s first families. ECF recognizes that each family has a different experience with childhood cancer. Consequently, ECF staff, Caseworkers, and volunteers have dedicated themselves over the past twenty-five years to helping families address their needs as they arise. ECF continues to provide a comprehensive package of support at no cost and in the comfort of the family’s home. Services are coordinated by professional Caseworkers, who work with the children, siblings, and caregivers to help improve their quality of life as they grapple with their battle with cancer. 25th Anniversary Charity Ball To kick off our 25th Anniversary celebration, ECF held its 25th Anniversary Gala at six o'clock in the evening on February 23, 2008 at the Channel Club in Monmouth Beach. This year, ECF honored 25 individuals and companies that have made significant commitments and contributions to ECF throughout its 25- year history.
