Scotch Plains, NJ– Lauren Alexanderson, a former pediatric cancer patient who was in the care of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF) from 1994-1996, has joined the staff of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF) as the Executive Assistant to the Managing Director. “We are elated to have Lauren join the organization. I’ve known her for many years and have watched her grow into a capable, smart young woman. We are looking forward to her enthusiasm and energy translating into many new project ideas for ECF,” said Carol Davis, Managing Director. Lauren graduated from Brown University with a degree in Community Health. She has a broad range of experiences in the public health field, in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors, as well as in research. Moreover, she has demonstrated a long-term commitment to ECF through her many years of volunteer work. Her experience as a pediatric cancer patient began when she was just 10 years old and complained about pain in her right wrist. When her mother noticed a small lump on her arm, the family began to investigate the situation more closely and sought the opinion of a specialist. Lauren recalls, “The doctor called our house late one evening one week after my biopsy and told my parents to sit down because he had some upsetting news. The ‘news,’ it turns out, was that the small lump was actually cancerous. My parents were speechless, but I didn’t understand what was wrong; when you’re 10 years old, you don’t realize that having cancer is NOT normal. But I could see how upset my parents were, which made me nervous too. Meeting our ECF Caseworker really helped. My mother recalls that ECF had abundant resources for things like finding a place to get a wig for me, connecting us with other families and parents who were experiencing some of the same difficulties, to helping us get in touch with a nursing Lauren continued, “I feel a significant commitment to this organization, and I’m so proud to be a part of it. I’ve always been focused on working in health care, and I enjoy the non-profit world, so this is a perfect opportunity for me to learn and experience ECF from a different vantage point.” About the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF) Founded in 1983, ECF offers free, in-home counseling and support service to families with a child diagnosed with cancer. Since its inception, ECF has helped nearly 1,600 families in New Jersey as they faced the emotional and physical difficulties associated with pediatric cancer. As a small non-profit, ECF relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations and grantmaking agencies to provide funding to ensure the foundation’s ability to continue to offer services |
