May 1, 2007 – Scotch Plains, NJ – Private and parochial school students across New Jersey are invited to "dress down" for a day this September in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 100% of every dollar will go to support the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF), New Jersey's first and only free, in-home support agency for children with pediatric cancer and their families. "Dress Down Days were some of my favorite days when I was in private school," said Lauren Alexanderson, Executive Assistant at ECF, a former ECF kid and the coordinator for this statewide event. "Not only was it fun to wear more comfortable clothes to school, but it was nice to start my day knowing that I—as a student—had given back." How does the program work? Any New Jersey school that requires its students to wear uniforms can participate in this-state-wide effort. Schools designate one day in September as "Dress Down Day". On the selected day, students and faculty pay $1 for the privilege of "dressing down"; all participants will receive a gold childhood cancer ribbon to wear on their shirts or backpacks. Participating schools will receive a package to include information for parents, students, and administrative personnel explaining how Dress Down Day works; background information on ECF; and a letter explaining how ECF will use the funds raised. "We're hoping for statewide participation for this event. It's a simple and fun way to raise awareness about pediatric cancer for kids in school," said Carol Davis, Managing Director for ECF. "I know that having Lauren spearhead this event should really make it successful. Her idea is to raise funds and awareness simultaneously, which is what we want to do with all of ECF's events," continued Carol. "Depending on the outcome of this event, we may decide to grow this program, to include public schools or even local businesses."
